You will be surprised to know after the female gives birth, the male hamsters clean up the area. He even makes sure that the mother has enough to eat and helps in child rearing. Hamsters come in a variety of coat colors like white, sandy, gray, brown and may even have a double color coat. They have different coat types like satin, rex, wavy and normal. You can recognize a Russian dwarf hamster from its signature dark striping on its backs.
Chinese Hamster
The Chinese hamsters are a long-tailed Dwarf hamsters. They have originated in China and grow only 3 inches in length. The average Chinese hamsters life span is only 3 years. They have a longer and thinner body with an extremely long tail. They have only three coat colors like brown, white and gray and white. These little ones will cling to your finger with all its four paws. They are really small and can easily get scared or injured when handled by young kids under 7 years of age. Therefore, be sure an adult is always present when a child handles these timid little hamsters. They have a life span of about 1.5 to 2 years.
Syrian Hamster
The Syrian hamster or Golden hamster is one of the most common types of pet hamsters. They are only 7 inches in length and thought to be rodents. They are nocturnal animals and are most active at dusk and dawn. The Syrian hamster has a cheek pouch to carry and hold food. When this little one gets access to a lot of food, it will store this food in a borrow area. You should avoid getting more than one of their kind as pets. They are kind of aggressive towards one another and females are known to attack the male just after mating. They have a mix of brown and black coat color and some may even come in gold color. You may observe white patches anywhere on their body.
Dwarf Cambell's Russian Hamster
The dwarf Cambell's Russian hamster is found in the semi deserts of Central Asia, Mongolia, Altai Mountains and Northeastern China. They measure only 8 to 10 cm and have a brownish color with a distinct stripe on the spine. They have a round plump body and furry feet. These are really social animals and great as group pets. They are nocturnal and may show short bursts of activity during daytime. These hamsters show a hierarchical structure when kept in groups or pairs. The one that dominates the other hamsters elicits a gesture of submission on hind legs in the corner of their cage. They may give you a nip if handled without care.
Roborovski Hamsters
The Roborovski hamsters are the smallest hamsters as they are just about 4 to 5 cm in length. These are short tailed dwarf hamsters and have a yellow brown color with striking whiskers. They are also the most playful and active of all hamsters. You need to give them a large cage and lots of play things to maintain agility. They are not the ones who liked to be held and cuddled, thus not suitable for children. They can live in groups of same gender and live up to 3 years.
You will find each hamster has an individual personality and needs. Hamsters although low maintenance pets, but they are really huge responsibility. You need to give them enough living space and keep them in an area with minimum disturbance during the day. This is because they are nocturnal animals and need their beauty sleep during the day. Do not keep the cage under direct sun, or your hamsters will be dehydrated. Keep away all the other pets, you may have and make sure they are not eaten up by the cat! I repeat, hamsters are huge responsibilities. If you get a pet hamster as pet for a kid, make sure they are ready to take good pet care.
